Solvent-based or water-based paint: which should you choose?
See the products concernedWhen choosing a car paint, one question always comes up: solvent-based or water-based? Both types deliver excellent results, but differ in terms of their composition, application and environmental impact. Here’s how to decide based on your project.
Solvent-based and water-based: what are we talking about?
A solvent-based paint uses organic solvents as a thinner. A water-based paint (or ‘water-based’) is diluted with water and contains far fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Since the tightening of VOC regulations, water-based paint has become the standard for workshop-tinted bases, whilst some primers and clearcoats often remain solvent-based.
Advantages and limitations of each type
| Criterion | Solvent-based | Water-based |
|---|---|---|
| VOC / environment | High | Low |
| Drying | Fast | More sensitive to humidity / ventilation |
| Metallic finish | Good | Excellent (particle distribution) |
| Application | Tolerant | Requires good ventilation |
| Regulatory compliance | Regulated | VOC compliant |
How to choose for your project
For a tinted base coat, particularly a metallic one, water-based paint offers a uniform finish and remains the benchmark in the workshop. For primers and clearcoats, there are still many high-performance solvent-based products available. In any case, never mix systems at random: use a consistent set (Primer, base coat, Clearcoat, compatible Thinner) from the same range. Find the paints, Clearcoats and thinners suitable for each system in our catalogue.
In terms of budget, the choice between solvent-based and water-based has little impact compared to labour costs: see our guide to bodywork paint prices. And before ordering, identify the exact colour usingthe Colour Code tool.
FAQ
Is water-based paint less durable than solvent-based paint?
No. The final durability depends mainly on the protective clearcoat. A water-based base coat covered with a good clearcoat offers equivalent durability.
Why has water-based paint become the standard?
To reduce VOC emissions, regulations have favoured water-based bases, which also offer excellent results, particularly with metallic finishes.
Can you mix a solvent-based system with a water-based system?
You should avoid mixing products at random. Use a consistent set (Primer, Base Coat, Clearcoat, Thinner) that is compatible, ideally from the same range.
