Aquabase Plus P995-HE07 Aluminium Blue matt basecoat, Nexa Autocolor
P995-HE07 is a colour from the Nexa Autocolor Aquabase Plus range, the water-based matt basecoat system designed for touch-up painting. It is supplied in a 0.5 L tin, for professional use only, and is applied in the workshop prior to a Nexa Autocolor two-component clearcoat.
A water-based base coat for colour matching in repair work
Aquabase Plus significantly reduces solvent emissions and complies with current VOC regulations. The system covers metallic, pearlescent, solid and special-effect colours. It offers good theoretical coverage and allows for a seamless blend, helping the workshop maintain productivity and profitability on spot repairs.
When used in combination with Nexa Autocolor clearcoats and primers, the base coat delivers a glossy, durable finish. The system can be used under a variety of application conditions.
Substrates and preparation
Compatible undercoats
Aquabase Plus is to be applied only to:
- Nexa Autocolor two-component sandable primers and undercoats;
- Nexa Autocolor two-component wet-on-wet primers, with the exception of product codes P565-668 and P565-777.
On new parts coated with cataphoresis, it is recommended to apply a Nexa Autocolor two-component primer first. Primers P572-2000 and P572-2001 must not be overcoated directly with the base coat. On plastic, use the Nexa Autocolor system designed for painting plastics.
Sanding and degreasing
The undercoat should be dry-sanded with P400–P500 grit using an orbital sanding machine with a dust extraction system (2 to 5 mm eccentricity). Edges should be finished with P800 or P1000 grit using foam sanding blocks. P850-1402 removes oil and grease. The water-dilutable surface preparation product P980-8252 removes water-soluble salts and sanding residues. Both are applied with a clean cloth, using a second cloth to wipe off any residue before drying.
Paint preparation
Dilution
The base coat is thinned with Aquabase Plus thinner P980-5000, or slow-drying thinner P980-5050, to achieve a viscosity of 28 to 31 seconds AFNOR at 20 °C. The proportions recommended in the technical data sheet are as follows:
- metallic, pearlescent or special-effect colours: 100 parts base to 20 parts thinner (minimum 10 per cent if maximum opacity is required);
- opaque colours: 100 parts base to 10 parts thinner;
- above 30 °C: up to 30 per cent thinner to facilitate application and the absorption of spray mist.
Mixing and filtration
The paint must only be mixed in plastic containers, never metal ones. Gently turn the pot upside down twice before measuring out the ingredients, then stir after weighing all the ingredients, without shaking. Filtration must be carried out using a nylon filter with a mesh size of 125 to 190 microns. Do not filter through the spray gun.
Application
Spray gun and conditions
Spraying is carried out using a semi-pressure or low-pressure gravity-fed spray gun with a 1.2 to 1.4 mm nozzle. The pressure should be adjusted in accordance with the spray gun manufacturer’s instructions. The application temperature is 23 to 25 °C.
Coats and flash-off
Apply single coats until opacity is achieved, allowing the basecoat to dry between coats until a completely matt finish is obtained. For metallic or pearlescent colours, a primer coat ensures a uniform appearance of the final colour. This should be applied to a dry or ‘semi-dry’ film. For opaque colours, this is not necessary. It is best to avoid applying coats that are too thick, as this may lead to air entrapment or micro-bubbling.
Drying
Fixed air nozzles or Aquadry nozzles speed up drying between coats. The choice depends on the size and type of repair. In the spray booth, the drying temperature is 23 to 25 °C. Before applying the clearcoat, the base coat must be completely dry. With IR drying, wait 5 minutes to allow the panel to cool.
Clearing
Only the recommended Nexa Autocolor two-component clearcoats should be used, in accordance with their technical data sheets. A one-component clearcoat must never be applied over an Aquabase Plus base coat.
Blended transitions and touch ups
For a flush blend, the area is prepared with the Spectral Grey (SG01 to SG07) specified in the colour formula, then sanded and cleaned with P980-8252. Dust and grit are removed dry, using a P1000 foam block applied with light pressure or a fine pad such as Abralon 4000, provided the base coat is completely dry and before clear coating. In all cases, the surface is then cleaned with P850-1402.
Cleaning the equipment
The spray gun should be cleaned with water; the gravity cup should be unscrewed and rinsed separately. Finish by spraying with clean P980-5000 thinner, then check that the spray gun is completely dry before storing or reusing it. Cleaning water must be disposed of in accordance with regulations.
Point to note
It is essential to check the colour before painting, as with any repair system. This is particularly important for effect paints, where the finish makes achieving a seamless finish more difficult. The paint must be thoroughly stirred before application.
